NCSB E-course: Basic Introduction to Systems Biology
Patronage
The Netherlands Consortium for Systems Biology (NCSB) together with the Netherlands Institute for Systems Biology (NISB) have set up this web-based e-course 'Basic Introduction to Systems Biology'.
Target group
Post-graduate scientists - PhD students, postdocs and other investigators holding a master degree - who wish to enter the field of systems biology and are working in the Netherlands.
[Note as per 2011 January: Due to its popularity, the course had to be restricted to scientists working in NL]
E-course
The e-course is fully web-based and is carried out individually. It consists of several modules, each of which can be taken independently (see below).
Each module consists of (a) readings, (b) recorded lectures, (c) assignments to monitor progress, and, (d) online-interaction with a tutor.
The course can start any time. Students are expected to finish within 3 months after the registration date.
Each module is equivalent to 3 EC credit points.
Available modules
Module 1: Basic Biology for Non-Biologists
Available since 2010-11-22.
This module gives scientists that have no training in biology an introduction in basic biomolecular and cell biological concepts.
Students are expected to purchase the textbook Molecular Biology of the Cell (Alberts et al.; Garland Science, 2008).
Module 2: Basic Modelling for Biologists
Available since 2010-11-22.
This module introduces biologists to basic quantitative modelling.
Students are expected to install MATLAB software on their own computer. A license can be obtained via most academic institutions.
Registration
Go to the online registration page, select the module which you would like to take and complete all fields of the webform. Upon completing this form you will receive an email containing your registration details.
Upon acceptance, you will receive a welcoming email with your login information for the 'electronic learning environment' at communities.uva.nl/portal/site/nisb. A course manual is then available to you from that site.
The course is free of charge (until further notice).
