Over the last ten years, the leaps and bounds made in genomics, related sciences and IT have made it possible to gain an almost full picture of all the components and processes in biological systems. Until very recently, however, their extreme complexity has hindered any meaningful interpretation and prediction of how these systems work under specific situation. System biology approaches this complexity by integrating components and part-processes in mathematical models that are capable of predicting the behaviour of the system. Topics currently being addressed by systems biology include cancer, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and ageing. Systems biology is essential for developing effective drugs and therapies for these major ailments.

The Netherlands has a key role to play in the development of this new science, and the introduction of this new consortium represents the start of an exciting new era in Dutch science. The research programme is now gaining momentum and we have a framework for collaborative integration of research in place. The time is now ripe to present the consortium, its research objectives and the key players.
